After spending a week working through Google’s top 100 suggestions of how to stop your PC infinitely rebooting, here comes the synthetic organic Jobroll....

Speciality chemical company Croda is advertising a couple of positions this month, both based in Hull. The European Synthesis Team seeks a research scientist to synthesise new materials and work with marketing to develop new materials - degree or PhD required, preferably with experience. The Technical Engineering Department seeks a development scientist to undertake lab, pilot plant and manufacturing scale work to develop existing and new processes. Degree required; process optimisation experience advantageous.

Key Organics – chemical supplier and contract services provider to a variety of sectors – has a number of vacancies for synthetic organic chemists, working in Custom Synthesis, Intermediates or New Products. Based in the picturesque village of Camelford in North Cornwall, their flexitime scheme probably allows for some mid-week surfing action over the summer months. Opportunities exist for graduates (min 2:1) and organic PhDs; some industrial experience advantageous.

A high value technology company in Leeds is looking for a synthetic organic chemist (£20-30k) to join their R&D department, initially in a temporary contract. The role includes the synthesis and analysis of organic molecules and development of these into medical devices. PhD or degree with 3 years experience required.

... coatings, composites, adhesives or formulation. R&D chemist (£18-24k) in North Yorkshire, designing and developing new polymeric coatings and repair composites. Includes occasional overseas travel.

... customer relations and ideally desalination/water treatment/oil & gas. Technical services chemist (£35k) in a large chemical manufacturing organisation in Worcestershire, providing customer and technical support in a desalination lab. Includes 1 month away per year (usually in the Middle East)

... thin film and foam production. Microtarget chemist (£21-30k) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, producing and characterising microtargets for the Central Laser Facility.

... materials science. Associate editor for Nature Materials, based in the London office. Roles include commissioning, editing and writing articles for the journal, liaising with the scientific community and attending international conferences. Requires a dynamic and outgoing PhD, preferably with postdoc experience.

... the consumer or medical sector. Organic chemist (£32k) in Cambridgeshire, creating, analysing and developing new technologies for medical devices, consumer products and industrial applications. Masters (2:1) required, PhD desirable.

The job boards appear a bit light following the 3-day week, but here is a smattering of positions for newly-qualified grads/postgrads.

Specialist scientific recruiter SCI are offering the role of apprentice scientific recruitment consultant (£18-20k, OTE £40k), based in Cheshire. Working with both clients and candidates to fill temporary and permanent positions, the applicant must have excellent inter-personal skills, a relevant scientific degree and a desire to develop a career in sales and marketing.

Lab Support are looking for a recruitment consultant to join them in Cambridge, covering the South East. A scientific degree and excellent communication skills are required. Previous relevant experience is desirable but not essential.

A company in North Yorkshire is recruiting a graduate regulatory officer, initially on a 12-month contract. Supporting the Regulatory Affairs team, tasks will include reviewing/interpreting legislation, writing safety data sheets and monitoring global regulations. BSc/MSc or PhD, with a demonstrated interest in regulatory affairs required.

An industrial mortar manufacturer in Bedfordshire seeks a graduate development chemist to carry out new product development and existing product improvement. Degree (inc 2012 graduates) with knowledge of formulation methodology required. Industrial experience (eg, placement) desirable but not essential.

Oxfordshire-based, petroleum additive manufacturer, Infineum is looking for a PhD or postdoctoral scientist to “present innovative and informed insights into complex business challenges.” The role includes project management and supervision of technicians. 

BP is recruiting a post-doctoral research associate on a 2-year fixed term contract. Year 1 will be spent at the University of Strathclyde, developing ultrasonic technologies to measure process streams. Year 2 may be spent at one of BP’s main research centres in California, Illinois or Hull (keep those fingers crossed...)

The University of Dundee is advertising again for a medicinal chemist (£29k) to join their Drug Discovery Unit, designing and synthesising pharmaceutically active compounds. Applicants for the 22-month post require a relevant PhD, or BSc with industrial medchem experience.

Vertex are recruiting a medicinal chemistry team leader in Oxfordshire. Degree or PhD with significant experience in the pharmaceutical industry required, as is supervisory experience.

Apollo in Stockport seeks a synthetic organic chemist to develop new synthetic routes and technologies to produce chemical intermediates (gram to kg), and supervise a team of chemists. PhD with 2 years' experience and people/project management skills required.

Teva are seeking a senior scientist (£25-30k) to join their New Product Development team in Runcorn. The role will involve designing and performing experimental work in compliance with cGMP, contributing to the development of new methodologies, processes and products. Experience of formulation, process dev or analytical desired; PhD, or degree with experience, required.

A Gwent-based development and manufacturing company in the energy sector are looking for a process chemist (£25-30k) to enhance product consistency, reproducibility and capability. Utilising tools such as six sigma, the role will support manufacturing operations and technical teams. HNC (minimum) with some  industrial experience.

A Derby-based FCMG healthcare manufacturer also requires a process chemist, to support the Production team through continuous improvement of batch manufacturing processes. With responsibilities including management of the Process Lab and providing support to QA and Procurement, experience in supervision, GMP and Quality Systems is required.
